Rather than assuming people simply lack discipline, it may be more accurate to recognize that our attentional systems are now operating in environments specifically designed to keep them engaged for as long as possible.

It would be a mistake to romanticize the past. Ancient humans faced disease, injury, food shortages, dangerous environments, and short life expectancies. Modern civilization has brought extraordinary advances in medicine, sanitation, education, transportation, and scientific knowledge. Billions of people today enjoy opportunities that previous generations could scarcely imagine.
The question is therefore not whether civilization was a mistake. It is whether some aspects of modern life have drifted away from conditions that support long-term human health and well-being. Every technological advance solves certain problems while sometimes creating new ones. Recognizing those trade-offs allows us to improve our systems rather than simply rejecting them.
Designing a Better Future
Understanding human evolution is not an argument for returning to caves or abandoning technology. Instead, it offers a valuable perspective on why certain environments seem to help us thrive while others leave us feeling stressed, distracted, or disconnected.
Perhaps the future of civilization is not about choosing between progress and nature. Perhaps it is about combining the strengths of both. We can continue benefiting from science, medicine, technology, and innovation while also designing homes, workplaces, schools, cities, and communities that better reflect the needs of the human mind and body.
The most successful civilization may not be the one with the fastest computers or the tallest buildings. It may be the one that remembers the ancient biology shared by every person living within it.
